  4. My favorite holiday tradition is doesn't happen anymore, but my family used to drive out the same three farm every year & pick out our Christmas tree! They had a building with a little gift shop & hot apple cider! It was great :)

  10. I have the artificial tree my family always put up every year when I was growing up. It was always the big thing - Dad would set up the tree the day after Thanksgiving, string the lights on it, and then it was a free-for-all with all the kids (I have three sisters and it wasn't unusual for there to be kids we were babysitting, fostering, or were otherwise visiting us to be around) putting ornaments on wherever they thought they looked best. Mom and Dad usually filled in the bald spots on the back of the tree (they set it up in a window so the lights would show outside at night, so they wanted the back to be properly decorated, too) and we kids sometimes had silly fights about where this or that ornament should go. There was occasional ornament-moving-when-no-one-else-was-looking for the next few weeks, too! :)

So yeah. I still do it with my kids - I set up the tree the day after Thanksgiving (I let them help with the bottom rows of branches that they can reach), string the lights on it, and then we all get together and put ornaments on. Sometimes they ask me about one or another ornament, and I can tell them how long I/my family have had that one, since when my mom died, my sisters and I got together and went through the ornaments and picked out the ones that meant the most to each of us...and they gave the rest to me since I was the only one with little kids to enjoy them. ^_^

  11. I was going to say opening stockings until I read the post above. Putting the ornaments on the tree and remembering the meaning or remembrance of the special one. A ribbon candy ornament to honor my brother who passed away in 2001 remains one of my favorites. The children have their favorites too.

  12. Thanks for the awesome giveaway! We don't have many traditions in our family, but a strong one is to always give my now-gone grandfather's favorite toast to the host. "To the hostess, who's beauty and grace is exceeded only by her culinary expertise!"

  13. My favorite holiday tradition is watching It's a Wonderful Life and A Christmas Story while doing last minute wrapping of presents and drinking hot cocoa on Christmas eve even though it's 70 degrees outside. Also, after opening presents on Christmas morning, we gather up the presents for our next door neighbors, and go over there and exchange gifts with their family. It's actually sad thinking about it because we're having to move out of our home, so they won't be our neighbors anymore, after 22 years of tradition. :'(
